Background and Objectives: Addiction relapse is a complex phenomenon, multifaceted and affected by biological, psychological and social factors. So far, several psychotherapy interventions have been performed to prevent. The present study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the results and evaluating previous research on the effectiveness of psychotherapy interventions in preventing addiction relapse.
Materials and methods: This is a descriptive review study that examined interventions during the period from 2007 to 2022. To obtain the desired articles, reliable scientific and informational databases including Civilica, Migna, Noor Magz, and Jihad Academi were searched based on the keywords of addiction, effectiveness, and relapse. 78 articles were retrieved and then screened and selected based on the inclusion criteria of the desired articles. Finally, 40 articles were analyzed descriptively and analytically, and the results were presented in tables. The statistical population of this research is all psychotherapy studies that have been conducted in the field of non-recurrence of addiction with an effective method. The reviewed documents included articles published in scientific journals, conferences and internal congresses of Iran.
Results: Among the 40 reviewed articles, 20 cases, i.e., 50% of the articles, were published in 2012-2017. The most researched topic was cognitive-behavioral with 11 articles, i.e., 27.5% of the articles. The geographical location of 20% of the studies was Tehran. In 40% of the articles the number of therapy sessions have been considered as 8 sessions. 52.5% of the studies have followed up their results with time intervals of 1 to 6 months. Laboratory test was the most used tool in the studies with 45%.
Conclusion: The findings of the present study can be used for scientometrics and highlight the necessity of planning to improve future research.
