Effectiveness of information-motivation and behavioral skills (IMB) model on adherence of Recommended treatment regimens in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Background & Aim: Non adherence to treatment regimen and its negative consequences has always been a major problem and multifaceted in health. The current study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of  information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model on adherence to treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes who referring to Mazandaran Diabetes prevention and suppression Association.

Material & Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 72 patients with type 2 diabetes were selected by available sampling and then randomly divided into control and intervention groups, according to Random numbers table, in each group, 36 patients were assigned. The data was carried out at pre-test, post-test (one month later) and track (three months later) by diabetic patients adherence information, motivation and behavioral skills scale (α=0.87) , general adherence (α=0.81) and specific adherence (α=0.87) scales in Babol Diabetes Association office. The intervention group received four sessions (80 minute) of IMB –based psycho– educational intervention in groups of nine members, whereas control group were given the usual intervention with supportive counseling psychology. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and analysis of covariance by SPSS software version 20.

Results: After the intervention, mean values of general and specific adherence to treatment significantly increased in intervention group from 13.75, 18.62 (pre-test) to 15.1, 22.5(post-test ) and 16.25, 22.5 (follow-up) respectively  (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Based on the findings, it appears IMB- based intervention to be as an effective intervention in promoting adherence to treatment in diabetic patients.
