Relationship between maternal serum HCG and fetal gender

Background & Aim: Todays, the safest and most accurate way to determine gender is ultrasonography. The earlies time that ultrasonography can be detected the gender is beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy. If the libratory test such as beta titers can identify the early stages of pregnancy even before Ultrasound diagnosis in high risk families maybe cause to legal abortion and to prevent the birth abnormality. This study aimed to investigate the relation between maternal serum HCG and fetal gender.

Material & Methods: This is a correlational study in which the relationship between β-hCG levels were measured with sex. In this study, Among pregnant women who referred to the Dezfuls health centers for filing prenatal care, 290 samples were selected by convenience sampling.

 all of the first session, all of the pregnant women were asked about β-hCG levels. After delivery the relationship between β-hCG levels were assessed with fetal sex. The data were analyzed data by descriptive and Inferential statistics tests using SPSS Software

Results: The result showed that there was a significant difference between &beta;-hCG level in mothers of boys and girls. so that mothers of boy baby showed a higher level of &beta;-hCG than who had a girl (p<0.001).

Conclusion: According to these results, it seems that there is a relationship between fetal sex and level of &beta;-hCG in pregnancy. More Complementary studies are needed to use these findings to replace cheaper and safer alternative method to determine the fetal sex.
