Abstract:   (302 Views)
Background & Objective: Giving birth in ambulance occurs due to reasons such as the long distance to equipped health centers, impassability of transportation roads, lack of awareness and delay in timely referral. This study was conducted to determine epidemiology of giving birth in ambulance in a one-year term in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province.
Materials and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study that was conducted retrospectively. It extracted the total missions related to pregnancy and childbirth in the pre-hospital emergency services (EMS) of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province in 2022 and the number of births before arrival to the hospital. Data analysis was done with SPSS/16 software and descriptive and analytical statistics.
Results: Out of 954 missions related to pregnancy problems, 6.18% (59 cases) led to delivery before being transferred to the hospital, of which 54.23% (32 missions) gave birth in the ambulance or attended EMS staff on the scene, and 45.77 % (27 cases) gave birth before EMS arrived. In the missions leading to delivery in the ambulance, 53.12% (17 cases) of them midwives were not present in the ambulance and the delivery was done with the help and accompaniment of male technicians.13 mothers (1.36 %) of those who contacted EMS were transported by helicopter due to the mother's dangerous condition or roads impassability.
Conclusion: It seems that due to the long distance from many rural and nomadic areas to equipped health care centers and the impassability of the roads, as well as the lack of timely referral of pregnant mothers, giving birth in the ambulance and before arrival to the hospital is inevitable. Therefore, in order to maintain the health of the mother and baby during childbirth, theoretical and practical training is required for pre-hospital emergency personnel to acquire skills in childbirth management.
